Our Story

A Nod to the Past,
a Passion for Today

Cheever Tavern takes its name from Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Cheever — one of America's premier literary voices of the 20th century. Born in Quincy, Cheever attended nearby Thayer Academy and is buried just a few feet from our front door at the First Parish Unitarian Church, where author John Updike delivered his eulogy.

We are a contemporary American tavern situated in historic Norwell Center, with a nod to the past but a passion for today's tastes. Whether you're seated inside our 75-seat dining room, out on the deck, or gathered around the fire pit on our spacious 45-seat patio — relax and enjoy.

The space was thoughtfully crafted by architect Robert Stansell, designer Nichole Carroll, and landscape architect Dave Seoane.
